2001 GMC Jimmy Brake Master Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the Brake Master Cylinder on 2001 GMC Jimmy?
A: The first step is to place the mounting flange into a bench vise for access to the primary Piston at the master cylinder's rear. Check the master cylinder reservoir by removing its cap and diaphragm to install fittings that suit necessary flare seats while allowing for hose attachment. Fits the transparent tubing to these ports which then direct the tubing into the master cylinder reservoir. Pump delco supreme 11(R) (GM P/N 12377967) or equivalent dot-3 brake fluid into the master cylinder reservoir until fluid reaches at least halfway until the hose ends remain fully underwater in a clean, sealed container. Depress and release the primary Piston several times using a rounded tool while checking fluid flow from ports. Master cylinder adjustment occurs when air leaves the primary and secondary pistons resulting in increased resistance against Piston depression along with decreased Piston travel. Perform the fluid bleeding process until liquid emerges through both ports without air bubble formation. Next follow these steps: first extract the tubes from the reservoir and reattach the reservoir top lid and its diaphragm before removing all tubing from port fittings then wrap the master cylinder with a clean cloth before removing the vise clamp.
