2004 Chevrolet Colorado Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the rear crankshaft seal and housing on 2004 Chevrolet Colorado?
A: The crankshaft rear oil seal housing replacement procedure starts by removing the Flywheel and the two bolts used to secure the Oil Pan to this housing. Begin by removing the crankshaft rear oil seal housing bolts then place two bolts into each of the threaded holes to function as jack screws until the housing detaches from both engine block and Oil Pan. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal housing with its two bolts from the jack screw holes while protecting the seal bore from damage. A combination of hammer and punch removes the crankshaft rear oil seal from the housing before its disposal. Both the crankshaft rear oil seal housing and the engine block and Oil Pan sealing surfaces require cleaning and inspections before installation. Seal gm pan 12378521 (Canadian P/N 88901 148) should be spread as a 3 mm (0.12 inch) bead along three specific areas: the crankshaft rear oil seal housing where it touches the engine block and where it touches the Oil Pan and the surface of the Oil Pan that faces the housing. Use the right alignment dowel to position the crankshaft rear oil seal housing before using the left alignment dowel to secure it against the engine block while using a press tool for installation. Tighten the crankshaft rear oil seal housing bolts to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.) then the end Oil Pan bolts to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). Apply a thin layer of clean engine oil to the crankshaft rear oil seal lip before inserting the plastic installation sleeve on the crankshaft alongside using the rear seal installer (J 44215) with driver handle (J 8092) and a hammer to set the crankshaft rear oil seal properly into position in the housing where the spring faces the engine and the seal is square. Finally, reinstall the Flywheel.
