2008 Chevrolet HHR Lash Adjuster Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the intake camshaft and lash adjuster on 2008 Chevrolet HHR?
A: The first step to change the intake camshaft and valve lifters requires removal of the camshaft position intake actuator and high pressure Fuel Pump while gradually turning off each bolt on the caps to minimize camshaft spring tension. You must properly mark the camshaft bearing caps before disassembling and removing bearing cap bolts and caps connected with valve lifter followers and Cylinder Head opening plate along with its bolts and lastly the rear bearing cap bolts and cap for replacing the intake camshaft and valve lifters. Extract the intake camshaft by maintaining the original order of roller followers and hydraulic valve lash adjusters for future installation. Continue by taking away valve rocker arms whereas also removing the hydraulic valve lash adjusters. Place the hydraulic valve lash adjusters into their Cylinder Head bores and apply lubrication to both adjusters and valve tips at the same time. The original locations of used valve rocker arms need to be restored but new rocker arms should be installed alongside a new camshaft replacement. Install the intake camshaft while lubricating it after positioning valve rocker arms on the valve stems and lash adjusters with lubrication. Lay down a 3.5 mm (0.138 in) beaded sealer on the Cylinder Head so the bead covers the rear bearing cap ends by 4.0 mm (0.1575 in) and stops 4.0 mm (0.1575 in) shy of each end point. The first procedure involves installing the two rear bearing cap bolts with torque set to 10 n.m (89 lb in) then moving forward with installing the Cylinder Head opening plate and bolts reaching the same torque of 10 n.m (89 lb in). Follow the valve lifter follower installation process while making sure the Cylinder Head bearing caps receive their caps according to their designated sequence marked on the bearing caps. Start by positioning the camshaft bearing caps on their places followed by a manual bearing cap bolt installation. Gradually tighten the bolts by 3 turns before achieving a final torque of 10 n.m (89 lb in). The last step involves reinstallation of the high pressure Fuel Pump alongside the camshaft position intake actuator.
