Remove rack-and-pinion boot, inspect tie rod; if clean, secure gear in a vise without disturbing preload. Detach shock dampener, unthread inner tie rod with pipe wrench and wrench on flats, then clean threads, apply threadlocker, reinstall and torque with proper tool. Stake housing, verify stake gap, reinstall dampener and boot.
