Chevrolet Astro automobiles have the Power Steering Pump which transposes the engine energy to hydraulic power steering to make the process easier. It works through creating hydraulic pressure which helps the driver control the movement of the vehicle especially at slow movements or when in a standstill. Pump is connected to the engine's crankshaft most often with a V-belt or serpentine belt and is equipped with a fluid container, either immersion or, less often, separate. Chevrolet Astro cars have had hydraulic power steering systems in previous years, which retain a direct connection of the steering with the wheels, and would allow manual steering even in the case of loss of hydraulic power. The problems associated with the Power Steering Pump are mainly leakage, noise and irregular flow of power assist and therefore require inspection or replacement. Therefore, the Power Steering Pump is an important component as it helps in improving the ease of driving as well as control.

Chevrolet Astro Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the power steering pump on Chevrolet Astro?
    A:
The Power Steering Pump replacement requires two essential tools which include the Power Steering Pump pulley remover (J 25034-C) and the Power Steering Pump pulley installer (J 25033-C). Start by taking away the upper Fan Shroud before proceeding to remove the fan followed by removal of the lower Fan Shroud. Using appropriate caution prevent damage to pulleys and pumps when utilizing the power steering pulley remover (J 25034-C) to separate the air conditioning compressor. You should use the Power Steering Pump pulley remover (J 25034-C) to detach the Power Steering Pump pulley through a process of holding the nut while rotating the pilot bolt clockwise. Set a drain pan under the Power Steering Pump before you detach its mounting bolts and nut because you must cap or plug the Power Steering Hoses to avoid fluid leakage. Unplug the power steering hoses from their positions on the pump before removing the pump unit. Begin Power Steering Pump installation by first placing it into its correct position before connecting the hoses to its rear side after uncovering their ends. Position the mounting bolts on the Power Steering Pump and tighten them to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) while the nut requires a torque of 41 nm (30 ft. Lbs.). Hammering should be avoided when securing the pulley onto the shaft. Use the Power Steering Pump pulley installer (J 25033-C) to install the pulley at the pump shaft ending while guaranteeing the pilot bolt rests in the bottom position of the shaft. The pilot bolt receives your hand while you rotate the nut in a clockwise direction to settle the pulley correctly. Reroute the air conditioning compressor and lower Fan Shroud and fan unit with the upper Fan Shroud. Pour fluid into the Power Steering Reservoir until reaching the cold/full mark followed by power steering bleeding and leak and clearance check of hoses.
