The Water Pump located in Chevrolet Cobalt car plays a significant role of pumping the coolant from the radiator towards the engine to absorb the heat produced by the burning of fuel. Almost all Cobalt models employ a belt-driven water pump, but there can be Electric Water Pumps on the latest Cobalt models. These pumps are usually of aluminium and used a rotating shaft with bearings, pulleys, impellers to provide high coolant circulation in the engine. Signs that can be attributed to a bad water pump are the presence of oil, regular squealing or unusual noises from the pump due to the deterioration of bearings and, at last, overheating of the car's engine. There are performance water pumps that can produce high coolant flow and has low power demand as compared to the regular water pumps suited for high-performance engines. There are also electric water pumps without any parasitic power loss and which can be placed at different positions more flexibly.

Chevrolet Cobalt Water Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the water pump on Chevrolet Cobalt?
    A:
Before working on the Water Pump you need to obtain its replacement tool j 43651 Water Pump holding tool. Start by removing the Thermostat Housing followed by both extra pieces-the Water Pump plate and the right fender lining panel. Use the Water Pump Drain Plug to remove coolant from the system at its bottom edge. The Water Pump holding tool (J 43651) must support the sprocket and chain during service to avoid having to re-time the balance shaft. Connect the Water Pump holding tool j 43651 by threading its bolts into the pump sprocket threads before putting back the access cover bolts to secure it on the front cover assembly. Remove the three bolts holding the Water Pump sprocket from the inside and then take out the Water Pump itself. Keep both front Water Pump bolts from the engine block in place and switch to the rear two bolts before extracting the Water Pump. Remove and discard the used o-ring from the Water Pump. Insert a new Water Pump o-ring seal before using an m6 m x 6 mm stud to create a guide pin for Water Pump assembly. Fitting the Water Pump directly onto the engine block requires inserting the guide pin through the Water Pump holding tool j 43651 and securing the Water Pump assembly in place with manual pump bolt tightening. Before adding the last bolt fix two inner Water Pump bolt threads. Remove the guide pin when done to insert the third bolt and tighten all the Water Pump bolts to 25 n.m (18 lb ft). After torquing Water Pump bolts to 10 n.m, remove the Water Pump holding tool and install the Water Pump access panel with its bolts secured at 10 n.m before installing and resetting the right fender and thermostat components.
