Start by lifting and supporting 8.6 and 9.5 inch axle vehicles on a hoist. After that, remove the tire and wheel assembly and afterwards remove the brake caliper. Removing the rear cover and gasket and the pinion shaft locking screw, comes next. To remove an axle without a locking Differential, take out the pinion shaft; with one that has a locking Differential, take it out just a little and turn the case so the pinion shaft reaches the housing. With the help of a screwdriver or similar item, rotate the lock (1) to align it with the thrust block (2) and then move the axle flange (1) forward so it touches the Differential, then get rid of the lock (4) from the button part of the Axle Shaft (1). Be careful not to turn the Axle Shaft when you are removing it so that the gears stay in place. After removing the Axle Shaft (1) from the housing (5), look at every component for signs of damage and change them if required. When mounting, push the Axle Shaft (1) into the housing (5) so that its splines get in contact with the side gear inside the Differential. If your axle is not a locking Differential, attach the lock (4) to the button at the end of the shaft (1); if it is a locking Differential, be sure that the pinion shaft is partly drawn back and lock (1) on the middle of the Axle Shaft so that the two ends are even with the thrust block (2). Pull the shaft flange back to put the lock in place within the Differential gear. Applying loctite 242 to the threads of pinion shaft locking screws before you install them stops them from becoming loose. Bring the pinion shaft hole and the screw hole on the Differential case together in the correct position and insert the pinion flange locking screw. Tighten it to 34 nm (25 ft. Lbs.). Place and attach the rear cover, gasket, brake caliper and a wheel with the tire onto the vehicle. After that, pour the rear axle with fluid: for 8.6" ring gear axles, leave 15-40mm (0.6 - 1.6inch) open to the plug and for 9.5" ring gear axles, leave 15-40mm (0.4 inch) open to the plug, then get rid of the supports and park the vehicle.
