Brake Master Cylinder is an important part of GMC Canyon brake system that translates the foot force into hydraulic pressure to manipulate slave cylinders. Force and displacement are boosted by this system, which applies hydraulic fluid to transfer force from the master cylinder's piston to the slave cylinders. The master cylinder is primarily used and responsible in controlling the calipers or the drum brakes in braking and in actuating the slave cylinder in disengaging the clutch. As for the braking system, the GMC Canyon vehicles apply a diagonally split hydraulic system, accompanied by the dual circuit master cylinders in case the hydraulic system fails to perform its task. For that on reason, the Brake Master Cylinder plays an important role in controlling the hydraulic force and the pressure applied on the brakes and clutch efficiently to provide safe and smooth rides.

GMC Canyon Brake Master Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the Brake Master Cylinder on GMC Canyon?
    A:
Secure the Brake Master Cylinder mounting flange on a workbench vise so you can access the back of the main Piston. Put suitable fittings on top of master cylinder ports so they match the brake line flare seat and can connect to hoses. Attach transparent hoses to the master cylinder ports through their fittings before placing them inside the reservoir. Put complete delco supreme 11 (R) gm brake fluid p/n 12377967 or its canadian equivalent dot-3 into the reservoir until the fluid lines reach their destination. Use sealed clean fluids from the original container. Push and let go the main Piston with a round tool for up to 25mm depths several times to check fluid flow through the ports. Pressing the primary cylinder requires more force and reduces its movement due to the air evacuation from the primary and secondary pistons. Regularly depress the primary Piston until the ports let out fluid without showing air bubbles. Replace the clear hoses inside the reservoir and put back the master cylinder parts. Next disconnect the hose fittings from their ports and use a cloth to cover the master cylinder before taking it off.
  • Q: How to replace the brake master cylinder on GMC Canyon?
    A:
Press and release the Brake Pedal a few times to lessen the power vacuum Brake Booster transferable vacuum during cylinder replacement. Insert a proper tool into the master cylinder reservoir to drain and dispose of its brake fluid correctly. You should clean the master cylinder parts using denatured alcohol to get rid of dirt buildup then let everything dry. Unplug the brake fluid level sensor wire connection and disconnect the master cylinder's secondary brake pipe fitting by sealing it with caps. After detaching from the master cylinder primary pipe you need to secure the brake pipe fitting with a cap and to block the master cylinder outlet port. Take the master cylinder nuts off and withdraw the master cylinder with its o-ring seal from the Brake Booster unit checking if the o-ring has issues and replacing it when required. For new master cylinders always run a bench bleed before final installation. Fold the o-ring seal into the groove of the master cylinder body before inserting it with the master cylinder onto the power vacuum Brake Booster. Fasten the master cylinder nuts at 30 nm torque (22 lb ft). Join the master cylinder primary brake hose from the outside and torque it to 17 nm (13 lb ft). Then connect the master cylinder secondary brake hose from the inside and torque it to the same torque value. Reinstall the brake fluid sensor wires before adding brake liquid into the master cylinder reservoir and conducting hydraulic brake bleeding procedures.
