The Ball Joint in GMC Canyon vehicles is responsible for joining the control arms to the steering knuckles so as to undertake suspension movement and steering sensitivity. This component has a up and down motion and motion from side to side allowing the vehicle to change position in relation to the road but remain aligned. This is commonly fabricated from steel similar to other components of the GMC Canyon such as Ball Joint that has a bearing stud as well as socket that comes with a rubber boot that will shield the ball joint from dirt and would also hold oil. Through the years, ball joints used in GMC Canyon vehicles include the loaded ball joint which is used to support the vehicles weight and the unload ball joint that is used to support the alignment of the vehicle without the need for support from the load. Available options are performance-oriented, professional ball joins for modified suspensions that optimize handling and durability of the tires. Thanks to improvements in design, new GMC Canyon Ball Joints are normally have a sealed-for-life construction, therefore, causing less need for servicing, although the service intervals are longer to deliver a reliable longevity with varied driving.

GMC Canyon Ball Joint Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the upper control arm ball joint on both 4WD and 2WD Z71 on GMC Canyon?
    A:
You should start with a normal procedure by raising your car for all z71 4wd and 2wd vehicles. Put the vehicle up and take out the tire and wheel before holding the lower Control Arm with a safe jack stand. Detach the front brake hose by removing the connection from the upper Control Arm while also taking out the wheel speed sensor brackets bolts. Separate the Control Arm from its ball stud connection by taking out and discarding the bolt retention and proceed to remove and discard the upper Ball Joint nut. To detach the Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle you should employ the Ball Joint separator (J-42188-B) and remove the Ball Joint from its mounting location. Install new Ball Joint to Steering Knuckle before securing new nut to upper Ball Joint and torquing it to 75 n.m (55 lb ft). Place the upper Control Arm onto the ball stud and fasten the retaining nuts while tightening them to 47 n.m (35 lb ft). Reinsert the wheel speed sensor brackets before installing and tightening the wheel speed sensor bracket bolt to 20 n.m (15 lb ft). After connecting the front brake hose to the upper Control Arm install the tire and wheel assembly remove the lower Control Arm support and lower the vehicle then check wheel alignment.
